What window material do you use, and why does it matter?

We use optical-grade PET (polyethylene terephthalate) for all cake-box windows, not the cheaper PVC most factories use. PET stays crystal clear after a year on the shelf, does not yellow under fluorescent lighting, and resists fogging when a cold cake comes out of the chiller. PVC, by contrast, slowly hazes and stains. Customers might not know the chemistry, but they notice the difference when they open the lid for a photo.

Do your cake boxes survive the heat in a delivery car?

Two issues happen in a hot car: the icing softens, and the box itself can bow if the board absorbs moisture. We solve both. The cake board itself uses a 1,000–1,200 gsm rigid grade that resists bowing up to 38 C and 80% humidity (we run accelerated ageing tests for these conditions). For drivers in tropical climates we also offer an insulated kraft sleeve that slows heat transfer by about 6 minutes.

What is a cake drum and do I need one?

A cake drum is the thick, foiled board that sits under the cake inside the box. It serves three purposes: it stops the cake bottom from sweating into the cardboard; it gives the cake stability when a customer tilts the box on a car seat; and it photographs beautifully under the cake on a counter. We supply matching drums in silver, gold, rose-gold, white and full-custom-print, in 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 inch diameters.

Can you make tall cake boxes for layered or tiered cakes?

Yes. Our standard tall-cake range goes from 6 to 14 inches in height. For three-tier wedding cakes (typically 12–14 inch base, 30+ cm tall) we engineer reinforced corner pillars made from a folded 1.2 mm rigid board that runs from base to lid. The pillars stop the lid from bowing under its own weight and from collapsing when stacked in a fridge. We have also engineered transport boxes for 5-tier wedding cakes—ask us for the case study.

What size cake boxes do you stock?

Inner dimensions: 4x4x4, 6x6x4, 6x6x5, 8x8x4, 8x8x5, 10x10x4, 10x10x5, 10x10x8, 12x12x5, 12x12x8, 12x12x10, 14x14x6, 14x14x8 inches. Plus tall variants up to 14 inches. We hold cutting dies for all of these so you do not pay tooling on standard sizes. Custom dimensions are usually available with a 7-working-day tooling cycle.

Are your cake boxes food-safe and FDA-approved?

All inner surfaces use FDA-, LFGB- and EU 1935/2004-compliant food-contact paper or coating. We supply the test reports per batch on request. For direct-contact applications (cake sitting on the bottom board without a doily) we use food-grade SBS or a food-safe aqueous coating. We deliberately avoid using recycled paper on the inner liner—food-safety regulations in the EU and US restrict recycled fibre in direct food contact.

Can I get my logo printed in full colour, foil or embossed?

Yes. CMYK process printing is included in the unit price. Pantone spot colour, hot foil stamping (gold, silver, copper, holographic, rose-gold), embossing, debossing, soft-touch matte lamination and spot UV are add-ons priced transparently on the PI. Most premium cake brands choose CMYK + 1 Pantone + soft-touch + spot UV on the logo—the combination that photographs warmest on a phone camera.

What is the minimum order quantity?

Stock structures (printed cake boxes on our standard cutting dies) start at 500 pieces with one Pantone or 1,000 pieces with full CMYK print. Custom-tooled structures start at 2,000 pieces. We have run sample batches of 200 pieces for new bakery startups; ask us, we are friendly to small openers.

How long is the lead time for printed cake boxes?

Pre-production sample with your artwork: 5–7 working days. Bulk production: 12–15 working days for typical jobs, 18–22 days for hot-foil or embossed jobs that need extra finishing. Sea freight from our Shenzhen plant: 22–28 days to LA, 26–32 days to Felixstowe, 28–35 days to Sydney. Door-to-door tracking shared on a live link until the box hits your warehouse.

Do you make wedding-cake gift boxes for guest favours?

Yes. Wedding-favour cake boxes typically come in two formats. Format 1: 2x2x2 inch single-slice favour boxes with a ribbon-tie lid, ordered in matching colours to the wedding theme. Format 2: clear-window cupcake favours with insert. Both are common at our high-tea, baby-shower and corporate-gift-cake clients. MOQ for favour boxes starts at 1,000 pieces.

Can the boxes ship flat to save freight?

Yes. Every cake box we ship is creased flat and folded into the lowest possible carton volume. A 1,000-pcs order of 10x10x4 inch cake boxes typically fits into 7 cartons (78 cm x 58 cm x 50 cm each), saving about 60% on container space versus pre-assembled boxes. The pre-creased structure assembles back to shape in under 8 seconds at the bakery counter.

The first wedding-cake order

Our cake-box business began with a single phone call in 2011. A pastry chef in Shenzhen had spent three months perfecting a five-tier rose-gold wedding cake for a Hong Kong bride. Two days before the wedding she discovered the only transport box she could find would not hold the height. She called us at nine in the evening; we cut a custom die at six the next morning, printed two prototypes by ten, and dropped them at her bakery by lunchtime. The cake arrived intact. The bride is now in the photo on our wall. We did not charge for that job. The window question

Customers walk past a bakery counter and the cake either gets noticed or it does not. The window is the difference. Most factories use cheap PVC film because it is 18% cheaper than PET. PVC haze, however, develops over months on the shelf and turns a beautiful cream cake into a dull, beige photograph. We standardised on optical-grade PET six years ago after a buyer in London ran a side-by-side test on his counter for nine months. The PET window stayed clear. The PVC window had a milky cast you could see from across the room. We have not bought a roll of PVC since.

The cake-drum question

The drum is the foil-covered board that sits under the cake. Done well, it is a tiny piece of jewellery: thick, smooth, with an embossed silver edge that catches the candle light. Done badly, it is a soggy cardboard rectangle that lets the cake bottom sweat through within twenty minutes. We supply drums separately or matched to every box. Foil colours: silver, gold, rose-gold, white. Drum thicknesses: 4 mm and 12 mm. Custom diameters from 5 to 18 inches. We laminate the foil ourselves on a dedicated line so the foil stays attached even after a humid courier ride.

The tall-tier engineering question

A two-tier birthday cake is an easy box. A three-tier wedding cake is an engineering problem. The lid wants to bow under its own weight. The walls want to flex when the box tilts. The cake itself wants to slide on the bottom board if the driver brakes hard. We engineer for all three. Our tall-cake range uses 1.2 mm rigid corner pillars that run from base to lid, a non-slip silicone-coated paper on the bottom that grips the cake board, and a flat reinforced lid sized so a flexed lid still does not touch buttercream. We have shipped these structures with 100% delivery success across hundreds of weddings.

How a Cake Box Becomes a Brand

The bakery rebrand story

A regional bakery chain in Australia came to us in 2022 with a problem. They had spent a year and a small fortune rebranding from a generic pink-and-gold logo to a confident matte-black look with a hand-drawn cherry illustration. Their cake boxes, however, were still being printed by a local supplier whose colours drifted batch to batch. The black went grey. The cherry red turned coral. Sizes the catalogue does not list

Standard cake-box dimensions cover the bulk of the market, but the niches are where we earn our keep. Sourdough panettone boxes (typically 18 cm cube). Croquembouche boxes (tall narrow, often 50 cm). Mooncake gift boxes for Mid-Autumn Festival (rectangular with internal compartments). Galette des Rois (round, very low). Fondant figurine boxes (clear PET tube with kraft base). The honest conversation

Cake-box buyers ask for "eco-friendly" on every quote. We respond with a question: which of the three claims do you want to make? Recycled content, recyclability, compostability. They are different things. We offer cake boxes with 35%, 70% or 100% post-consumer recycled outer ply (the inner ply must remain food-grade virgin fibre under EU and US food-contact regulations). We offer aqueous coatings that are widely accepted in curbside paper recycling streams. We offer PLA-lined cake boxes for the home-bake online segment that ship through the post and need a moisture barrier; PLA is industrially compostable but not curbside-recyclable. We will tell you which logo your spec actually qualifies for, instead of slapping a generic green leaf on the artwork.

Our own footprint

The Shenzhen plant runs 38% of daytime electricity from rooftop solar. We have closed-loop solvent recovery on every offset press. Paper trim is sold to a Guangdong recycling mill. We do not pretend any of this makes cake packaging carbon-neutral; we do think it makes us a defensible supplier for brands whose customers ask the eco question.

How We Run Your Cake Box Order

Step 1 — brief and quote (day 0–1)

Send us cake size, monthly volume, target unit cost, brand colours and any artwork. Our sales engineer comes back the same day with a structural recommendation, price band and lead time. We will also tell you if your brief is over-spending or under-spending—a 22-cent box for a $4 cupcake usually does not make sense, and we will say so.

Step 2 — structural design and 3D mock-up (day 2–4)

Free of charge. Our structural team builds the die-line, our graphic team mocks up the print, and we send a photo-real 3D rendering plus a flat file. You see exactly what your cake box will look like before any plate is engraved.

Step 3 — printed sample (day 5–7)

A real printed dummy on the actual paper specification. You can put a real cake inside, drive it across town in a hot car, photograph it on your bakery counter and share it with your brand team. We will not move to mass production until you sign off on the dummy.

Step 4 — mass production (day 8–22)

Plates engraved, paper laid up, four-colour offset run, aqueous coating in-line, die-cut, glued, palletised. Daily photo updates from the production line if you ask for them.

Step 5 — QC and shipment (day 22–25)

AQL 2.5 final inspection with a 30-page photo report. Container loaded with corner-protected pallets. ETA tracking shared on a live link until the box hits your dock.

Quality Control for Cake Packaging

What we actually check

Pre-production: paper GSM tested, coating weight measured, moisture content logged, PET window optical clarity inspected, colour drawdown approved against the master swatch. In-line: every 500 sheets the press operator pulls a sample, checks register, density and Delta-E, signs the time-stamped log. Pre-shipment: AQL 2.5 inspection on the finished pallets with a 30-page photo report sent before the container is sealed.

The window-fogging test

One unique cake-box test we run: we condition a finished box at 4 C for two hours, then move it to a 28 C / 80% humidity environment for ten minutes. PET windows do not fog. PVC windows do. The test takes 90 minutes per batch and the customer gets a single yes/no result with the photo evidence attached. It is one of the small things that distinguishes our cake-box programme from a generic carton supplier.

Cake Box Glossary — The Words Buyers Should Know

SBS, FBB, kraft

SBS is solid bleached sulphate, the bright white food-grade board most premium cake boxes use. FBB is folding box board, slightly cheaper and slightly more matte. Kraft is the natural-brown unbleached fibre used for rustic and eco-positioned cake boxes. We run all three on the same factory floor and will recommend based on your brand position.

PET, PVC, OPS

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is our standard window material—crystal clear, stable, food-safe. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is the cheap alternative; it hazes over time. OPS (oriented polystyrene) is sometimes used for cupcake domes; it is rigid and clear but more brittle than PET.

Drum, foil-laminated, edge-banded

The drum is the thick board the cake sits on. Foil-laminated means the drum is wrapped in metallic foil for a premium look. Edge-banded means the drum has a strip of foiled paper around its edge so the colour wraps neatly around the side—the small detail that turns a basic drum into a wedding-photo prop.
