What flute size should I choose for pizza boxes?

Most pizzerias choose B-flute (about 3 mm) for the right balance of stack strength and printability. E-flute (1.5 mm) prints better but crushes faster under stacking. We run both lines in-house and will recommend based on your pie size, delivery distance and stacking habit. For pies above 14 inches we usually push customers toward B-flute.

Do your pizza boxes have ventilation holes?

Yes—four vent holes near the top corners by default, sized to release the steam that softens the crust without letting too much heat out. We can move them, change the pattern, or laser-cut a logo-shaped vent. The vent design is part of the structural drawing we send you for approval.

Can I get pizza boxes that survive 30 minutes of delivery?

Plain corrugated kraft holds heat for around 18–22 minutes. For 30+ minute deliveries we offer two upgrades: an aluminium-foil inner liner that bounces radiant heat back to the pie, or our insulated shipper with foam-aluminium walls. Both keep pies above 60 C for 35–45 minutes.

What is the minimum order for printed pizza boxes?

Stock structures (10 / 12 / 14 inch with our standard die) start at 1,000 pieces with 2-colour print. New structural design starts at 2,000 pieces because of the cutting die cost. Sample run? We have done 300-piece launch batches for new pizza concepts; ask us, we are friendly to small openers.

How fast can you ship?

Pre-production sample with your artwork: 5–7 working days. Bulk production: 12–15 working days for typical jobs. We share a real Gantt chart, not a vague "about three weeks". Sea freight to LA arrives in 22–28 days, to Felixstowe in 26–32 days.

Are your pizza boxes grease-proof?

We run two grease-proof solutions. Solution 1: aqueous (water-based) coating on the inner side—FDA-compliant, recyclable in paper streams. Solution 2: traditional PE poly liner—cheaper, but harder to recycle. Both pass our 60-minute / 70 C grease-resistance test without bleed-through.

Can you print full colour with my photographs?

Yes. We run Heidelberg offset for high-volume photographic print and HP Indigo digital for short runs and variable data. Standard CMYK is included; spot Pantone, hot foil, embossing and spot UV are add-ons priced transparently on the PI.

What sizes do you offer?

Our standard cutting dies cover 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16 and 18 inch pizza boxes. We also stock half-square slice boxes and rectangular Detroit-style 10x14 boxes. Anything outside that range we can tool a custom die in 7 working days.

Do the boxes stack on a delivery scooter?

Stack strength is engineered into the corrugated wall. B-flute kraft 175 gsm liner / 125 gsm fluting carries six 14-inch pies safely on a typical delivery thermal bag. We test every batch on the BCT (box compression tester) and report the result on the spec sheet.

Can I use recycled paper?

Yes. About 35% of our pizza-box volume already runs on FSC recycled liner with virgin food-contact inner layer. The recycled grade is roughly 4% cheaper than virgin. We can also do 100% post-consumer recycled if you carry the eco-claim front-and-centre on your brand.

Do you handle door-to-door logistics?

Yes. Our forwarding partner runs weekly LCL containers from Yantian to LA, NY, Hamburg, Felixstowe, Sydney, Dubai. A 1,000-piece pilot pallet typically lands at a US warehouse for a few hundred dollars in freight. We quote EXW, FOB, CIF and DDP.

What is the difference between a trading company and Holidaypac?

When you ask for a tighter Pantone match or a structural change, the answer comes back from the press operator and the structural engineer—not from a translator forwarding emails. We invite serious clients to a video walk-through of the floor.

About Holidaypac — A Pizza Box Factory With a Brand

The first 5,000 pizza boxes

Our first pizza-box order came in 2009. A second-generation Italian-American owner had opened a wood-fired pizzeria in Hong Kong and wanted boxes that did not look like every other red-and-white box in town. He asked for matte black, gold logo, no grease stains. We ran the job on the same Heidelberg press we still use for short premium runs today, with a hand-mixed soy ink that took three days to dial in. The pizzeria is still open, the owner is still our friend, and that black box is still on his counter sixteen years later. We tell that story because it explains the way we think about pizza packaging—a pizza box lives on the table for forty minutes and on the customer's phone camera for years.

Pizza is the most photographed food on the planet. It is also the most price-sensitive food packaging category in the world. The temptation for buyers is to chase the cheapest carton and accept whatever turns up. We have watched too many promising pizzerias lose their visual identity to a beige box with a generic red drawing. Steam, vents, and why the crust goes soggy

The single biggest complaint pizza customers post on review sites is "the crust was soft when it arrived". The cause is moisture. A 14-inch pie releases roughly 90 ml of water vapour in the first ten minutes after the oven, and if that vapour cannot escape, it condenses on the lid and drips back onto the crust. We engineer four corner vent holes by default, sized at 8–10 mm. For premium chains we cut a logo-shaped vent. Bigger vents lose heat, smaller vents trap moisture. The standard 8 mm vent is the sweet spot we have validated with twelve pizzerias over three years.

Grease bleed-through and food safety

A pepperoni pie can leak 2–3 grams of oil onto the inner surface in fifteen minutes. Without a barrier, the oil migrates through the corrugated wall and stains delivery bags, car seats and customer hands. Our default solution is an aqueous (water-based) grease-resistant coating on the inside surface, applied in-line on a flexo press. It is FDA, LFGB and EU 1935/2004 compliant. It is also kinder to recycling streams than the traditional PE plastic film. We run a 60-minute oil-resistance test on every production batch.

Stack strength and the delivery scooter problem

A delivery driver in Manhattan or Bangkok regularly stacks six pizza boxes inside a thermal bag and climbs onto a scooter. If the bottom box crushes, the bottom pie is ruined and your brand takes the blame. We engineer for that scenario. Our default B-flute corrugated wall (175 / 125 / 175 gsm) carries 28 kg of static load on the BCT. We can specify higher: 35 kg with an upgraded 230 gsm outer liner. Every batch ships with the BCT report attached.

The unboxing moment is on TikTok

Five years ago a pizza box was a piece of cardboard. Today it is a content asset. We have a customer in Texas whose customers post unboxing videos because the inside of his lid is printed with a hand-drawn map of the neighbourhood and a thank-you note from the founder. The marginal cost was 2 cents per box. The marketing return was tens of thousands of organic Instagram impressions a month. When pizza packaging is treated as part of the brand experience instead of a cost line, the maths shifts dramatically.

Print finishes that earn the camera

Soft-touch matte lamination is the finish that has dominated premium pizza in the last three years. It feels velvety, photographs warm, and resists fingerprints. Hot foil stamping (gold, copper, holographic) on the lid corner adds a luxury cue. Embossed logos register on camera even in poor lighting. We run all four finishes—matte lamination, gloss lamination, soft-touch, and spot UV—on the same Heidelberg line, so we can mix them on a single box without batching delays.

Sizes, shapes, and Detroit-style

The traditional 12-inch round is still 60% of our pizza-box volume. Detroit-style 10x14 rectangles are growing fast in the US. Half-pie boxes (six rectangular slices for three customers sharing) are taking off in Europe. Triangle slice boxes for grab-and-go cost-per-piece and are 30% lighter on the freight bill. We hold cutting dies for all of these.

Sustainability Without Green-Washing

What "eco-friendly pizza box" really means

The phrase appears on every pizza-box quote we receive. It also has no fixed legal meaning. Here is how we break it down for buyers. Recycled content: percentage of the paper that came from post-consumer waste; we offer 35%, 70% or 100% PCR liners. Recyclability: whether the box can be processed in a curbside paper stream after a customer eats from it; aqueous-coated kraft is widely accepted, PE-laminated kraft usually is not. Compostability: whether the box will decompose in a commercial composter within 12 weeks; we offer a PLA-lined option that meets BPI / TUV OK Compost standards.

We will tell you which logo your spec actually qualifies for, instead of slapping a generic green leaf on the artwork. That has cost us a few quick wins. It has earned us a lot of long contracts.

Our own footprint

Our Shenzhen plant runs 38% of daytime electricity from rooftop solar. We have closed-loop solvent recovery on every offset press, capturing 100% of the volatile organic compounds. Our paper trim is sold to a Guangdong recycling mill that turns it into low-grade liner—we recycle 92% of paper waste. We do not pretend any of this makes pizza packaging carbon-neutral. We do think it makes us a defensible supplier for brands whose customers ask the eco question.

How We Run Your Pizza Box Order

Step 1 — brief and quote (day 0–1)

Send us pie size, monthly volume, target unit cost, brand colours and any artwork you have. Our sales engineer comes back the same day with a structural recommendation, a price band and a lead time. No multi-day silence, no generic price lists.

Step 2 — structural design and 3D mock-up (day 2–4)

Free of charge. Our structural team builds the die-line, our graphic team mocks up the print, and we send you a photo-real 3D rendering plus a flat artwork file. You get to see exactly what your box will look like before any plate is engraved.

Step 3 — printed sample (day 5–7)

A real printed dummy on the actual paper specification. You can drop a hot pizza into it, slide it into a delivery bag, take it on a 30-minute drive and check whether the crust survives. We will not move to mass production until you sign off on the dummy.

Step 4 — mass production (day 8–22)

Plates engraved, paper laid up, four-colour offset run, aqueous coating in-line, die-cut, glued, palletised. Daily photo updates from the production line if you ask for them.

Step 5 — QC and shipment (day 22–25)

AQL 2.5 final inspection with a 30-page photo report. Container loaded with corner-protected pallets. ETA tracking shared on a live link until the box hits your dock.

Single-shop neighbourhood pizzerias

We do not have a minimum project value. A neighbourhood pizzeria with 300 boxes a month is welcome here. We have helped dozens of independent owners launch a logo box for the price of three weeks of plain kraft.

Regional and national chains

Our biggest pizza customer runs 800 stores across three countries. We deliver 4.2 million boxes a year to their central warehouse on six-week rolling lead times, with colour consistency tracked across batches by spectrophotometer.

Frozen pizza and supermarket private-label

The fastest-growing pizza-box segment is frozen pizza for grocery aisles. Different rules: thinner stock (white-clay coated SBS, not corrugated), tray inside, freezer-safe glue. We run a dedicated line for this segment and ship to several US and EU supermarket private-label brands.

Cloud kitchens and ghost-kitchen platforms

The newest segment. Cloud kitchens often run 6–10 brands from one location and need fast tooling, low MOQ, multi-SKU shipments. We are set up for that with our HP Indigo digital line for variable data and short runs.

Pizza Box Glossary—The Words Buyers Should Know

Flute, GSM, BCT

Flute is the wavy middle layer of a corrugated board. B-flute is about 3 mm tall and is the workhorse for pizza; E-flute is 1.5 mm and prints better but crushes faster; F-flute is the thinnest and is rarely used for pizza. GSM is grams per square metre, a measure of paper weight. BCT is the box compression test, the standard lab measurement of stack strength.

Aqueous coating, PE, PLA

Aqueous coating is a water-based varnish applied in-line on the press. It seals the inner surface against grease, is FDA-compliant and recyclable. PE is polyethylene plastic film laminated onto the kraft. It blocks grease cheaply but complicates recycling. PLA is a corn-based bioplastic film. It is industrially compostable but more expensive.

Pantone, Delta-E, soft-touch

Pantone is the global colour-matching system. Delta-E is the mathematical distance between two colours; below 2 the human eye usually cannot tell them apart, and that is our colour-matching standard on every printed pizza box. Soft-touch is a velvety lamination finish that has dominated premium pizza in the last three years.

What Pizza Box Buyers Often Forget to Ask

The cutting die ownership question

Almost every new buyer forgets to ask who owns the cutting die after the first run. Some Chinese suppliers quietly hold the die hostage so the buyer cannot move to another factory without paying for new tooling. We pay the die cost transparently on your first PI, label it "Cutting die for [your brand]", and store it in our tool room with your name on the rack. If you ever want to move suppliers, we courier the die to the new factory at our cost. We have never had to do it; we mention it because the policy itself tells you something about how we view long-term partnership.

The colour drift question

Most pizza brands order on a rolling six-week schedule. Between batch one and batch six it is normal for printers to let the colour drift slightly because the paper lot changes, the ink ages, the press warms up differently. We archive the master swatch, run a pre-press drawdown against it before every batch, and reject any sheet whose Delta-E exceeds 2. The result is that batch six looks the same on the customer's shelf as batch one. That sounds simple. Most factories do not actually do it.

The reorder lead-time question

Once tooling is in our system, reorder lead time drops from 18 working days to 12 because we skip plate engraving and structural design. Buyers who place rolling orders typically save 15–20% on time-to-shelf. We track this on every account dashboard.

The packaging-as-marketing question

If your pizza box is the only paid media touchpoint that reaches every single customer, what should it cost? We have buyers who treat the box as a 7-cent commodity and buyers who treat it as a 30-cent brand asset. The 30-cent buyers usually grow faster, in our experience.
