The "Simple" Product That Wasn't So Simple

Let’s be honest for a second. When you look at a cardboard display stand, you probably don’t think "chemical hazard."

I certainly didn't used to.

It’s just paper and glue, right? But when a client approached us with a display made from cardboard and cartons destined for the German market, we knew better. The European Union doesn't operate on assumptions. They operate on strict data

If you want to move goods into the EU, you have to prove they are safe.

The client needed to ensure their product wouldn't get flagged by customs or, worse, pulled from shelves. The solution was conducting a thorough REACH and Packaging Safety Assessment.

Why a REACH and Packaging Safety Assessment Matters

You might be asking, "Why do I need to test cardboard?"

Here is the reality. Recycled papers, inks, and adhesives can harbor nasty invisible chemicals. To clear the path for these goods, we couldn't just do a quick visual check. We had to dig into the chemical composition.

We structured a testing plan that covered the heavy hitters of EU regulation.

This wasn't about checking boxes; it was about ensuring the materials—from the corrugated board to the printed coating—were free from restricted toxins. A proper REACH and Packaging Safety Assessment goes beyond just the basics. We looked at specific regulations like Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH) and the Packaging Regulation (EU) 2025/40.

Breaking Down the Chemical Checklist

We didn't leave anything to chance. Based on the product profile, we executed a rigorous testing suite at our Shanghai laboratory.

Here is what we looked for:

• PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons): These are often impurities found in plasticizers or black pigments. We tested for 15 different types to meet the AfPS GS 2019:01 standard.
• Phthalates: These are chemicals used to make plastics more durable, but they are heavily restricted in the EU. We ran a 7P composite test to ensure compliance with REACH Entry 51 and 52.
• Heavy Metals: We tested for Total Lead (Pb) and Total Cadmium (Cd) in the substrate. These are classic neurotoxins that regulators hate.
• SVHCs (Substances of Very High Concern): This is a critical category. We specifically screened for SCCPs and MCCPs (Short and Medium Chain Chlorinated Paraffins), which are often used as flame retardants or plasticizers but are environmentally persistent.
• Organotins: We performed a screening for Total Tin to ensure no harmful organotin compounds were present.
• DMFu (Dimethylfumarate): This is an anti-fungal agent that used to be common in sachets but can cause severe allergic reactions.
• POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants): We also checked for Pentachlorophenol (PCP), a preservative treated strictly under Regulation (EU) 2019/1021.

The Logistics of Safety

Testing sounds like it takes forever, doesn't it?

It doesn't have to. For this project, we operated on a 7-day regular turnaround time. Speed is essential when you have a shipment pending.

To get this done, we needed 3 pieces of the complete product and an extra 5-10 grams of each raw material. It’s a small amount of material to sacrifice for the peace of mind that comes with a verified report.

By covering both the product materials and the specific packaging regulations regarding heavy metals, we provided a holistic view of the product's safety profile.

The Verdict

Entering the EU market requires more than just a good product; it requires a good dossier.

By proactively screening for everything from PAHs to Heavy Metals, we helped the client avoid the nightmare scenario of a recall. They received a detailed breakdown of every substance, ensuring that their cardboard displays were just that—simple, safe cardboard.
